The invitation held particular significance. TASIS England is more than just a venue to Shannon, it is deeply personal. Her daughter attended and graduated from the school, and its distinctive culture is even referenced in her book, Because: 12 Essential Skills for Connecting How You Lead with Why. For Shannon, returning to speak at the school felt like a full-circle moment.

The theme for the event, Fifty and Forward, marked the school’s 50th anniversary and brought together a diverse lineup of speakers. Shannon’s talk, Being Human in the Age of AI, connected closely with the event’s focus on the future, exploring how leaders can hold onto what makes us human in a rapidly evolving, technology-driven world. Despite being given a short preparation window, Shannon crafted a talk grounded in both her professional work and personal values. It was also shaped by the years she spent connected to the TASIS community as a parent, adding an emotional depth to the experience.

Interestingly, one of the most impactful moments came not during the talk itself, but just before it began. As Shannon waited backstage, she met several of her fellow speakers, many of whom were students. Among them were young voices like Ziva Wilson, who spoke about practical steps to address global warming; Charlie Newman, who reflected on how environments shape the way people live; and Isaac Moore, who shared a moving perspective on life with autism.

Across the event, student speakers addressed topics ranging from environmental responsibility to relationships and future possibilities. Their presence embodied the very qualities Shannon highlighted in her own talk: curiosity, flexibility, generosity, and presence.

Stepping onto a TEDx stage also challenged Shannon in new ways. Unlike the highly interactive leadership programs she typically facilitates, the format required delivering ideas to a silent, attentive audience under bright lights. Still, the experience was one of pride and alignment. Sharing the stage with both young changemakers and fellow adult speakers, Shannon contributed to a celebration not only of TASIS England’s history, but of its future.

At the heart of her message was a powerful idea: In a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, the responsibility to protect what makes us human has never been more important.
